Kagoshima Organic Hojicha - ほうじ茶 / CERTIFIED ORGANIC
Region: Kagoshima, Japan
Type: Roasted Green Tea
Ingredients: 100% Organic Green Tea
Hojicha (ほうじ茶) is a roasted green tea with a toasty / earthy flavor and natural sweetness. This hojicha is made by roasting sencha and, naturally low in caffeine, it is a soothing tea that can be enjoyed at any time of the day.
Hojicha has its origins in the Edo period, when tea makers began roasting lower-grade leaves to enhance their flavor and reduce bitterness. The roasting process not only lowers the caffeine content but also gives the tea its signature warm, nutty aroma. In Kyoto, the scent of hojicha became an everyday presence, especially during the colder months, making it a comforting and familiar tea in Japanese households.
Hojicha pairs well with meals and is often enjoyed as an after-dinner tea, thanks to its smooth and refreshing taste.
Tasting Notes
- Toasty & Aromatic – A deep, roasted flavor with a warm, nutty aroma.
- Smooth & Mellow – Low bitterness and natural sweetness from the roasting process.
- Mild & Comforting – Naturally low in caffeine, making it a perfect tea for relaxation.
Brewing Instructions
Hot Brew:
- Use 4-5g of tea per person (about 1 teaspoon) for 240ml of hot water (around 100°C).
- Pour hot water into the teapot, cover, and steep for 30 seconds.
- Pour evenly into cups, making sure to extract every last drop for a well-balanced brew.
For the second infusion, since the tea releases fewer components, steep for 45-60 seconds. This second infusion will be a bit lighter than the first but still flavorful.
Cold Brew:
- Use 10g of hojicha leaves.
- Add 500ml of cold water.
- Steep in the fridge for 4–6 hours.
- Strain and enjoy.
Consume within 24–48 hours for the best flavor and freshness.
Storage:
Store in a cool, dry place, away from odors and light.
